World demand for silicon feedstock is increasing in both volume and price. Venture Southland in conjunction with New Zealand Trade & Enterprise is currently investigating opportunities for the refining of high purity Southland Silica in Southland. In a press release in The Southland Times of 28 June, 2016, Venture Southland General Manager of Strategic Project Steve Canny said there were several parties interested in developing the industry in Southland. The deposits could be worth billions when smelted into silicon for computer chips and solar panels.
This prime 22hec site contains in excess of 1,000,000 cubic metres of world-class, polysilicon reserves used in the production of solar silicon metal wafers in solar panels. Feedstock of this high purity at up 99.5% is in increasingly high demand worldwide.
The deposits run through the property and into a neighbouring 33hec property which the vendor holds an option to buy. Total reserves surveyed in the area are estimated to provide 80,000 tonnes per annum for the next 50-years. A former gold mine, assessments are currently ongoing to determine the current amount recoverable.
Included is a modern metal barn with a gold processing room as well as living accommodation and a modern processing plant for the silica aggregate. A nearby site has also been surveyed and approved for a building platform.
The vendor, an honours graduate of the Otago School of Mines, has experience working in mines in Witwatersrand, South Africa and was a former Inspector of Mines in New Zealand. Consents include a New Zealand mining Permit ( 52577 ) and a Gore District Council Land Use Consent.
